Absinthe is a very misunderstood liquor. A lot of people have a lot of misconceptions about it. Some say it makes you hallucinate. Some say it makes you more creative. Some even say it make you go crazy! In fact it was banned in the United States in 1915 because it was considered dangerously addictive and not until recently was it available for purchase.
I’ve never experienced any effect other than a hangover from Absinthe. To be honest I’ve never had much of a taste for Absinthe. It is a very strong liquor, at 90-148 proof you only need a little bit of it to get the job done. It also has a very strong taste, made from green anise and fennel. At our house we have two different kinds of Absinthe because Mike is a fan.
The bottle on the right is from France. The bottle on the left was purchased in the United States and isn’t ‘Real Absinthe’ Mike says.
The Absinthe Drip
1/2 Ounces of Absinthe
1 Sugar Cube
Ice Cold water.
First you pour the Absinthe
Then you pour cold water over a sugar cube.
This causes the green Absinthe to become white and cloudy in color.
And that’s it!! Your cocktail is done! Simple and easy.
After we drank our cocktail Mike wanted to do his own version of the Absinthe Drip which of course involved fire! This version is done as a shot. You pour the Absinthe over a sugar cube into a smaller glass and set a sugar cube on fire.
The molten sugar will drip into your liquor so make sure you let it cool off before you drink it down quickly.
Mike says it’s a little stronger than the original version so be careful of you’ll end up passed out on top of your own bar.
Join us next for interview with Mike and William and our next cocktail the Algonquin!!
“Not real absinthe”?!?!!? That’s the last time I buy you liquor!
